Fireboy is one of those artists that will be here longer than everyone else.
The fact that he’s only been here for a little under three years is definitely something.
In 2019, he had one of the best years in music, dropping hit singles all through the year and then capping it with his electric debut studio album, “Laughter, Goosebumps and Tears,” a modern classic in its own right.
Fireboy released his second album, less than a year ago.
The release of his sophomore album, “Apollo” in the year 2020, during the lockdown, was met with mixed reviews. The hiccup came especially from critics and fans alike who thought his second album has come too soon. But he had three solid lead singles (“New York City,” “ELI,” and “Tattoo“) and with those songs, it’s hard to not hit the ground running with an album and the hype already around Fireboy.
The album didn’t just go down as one of the bests of 2020, it also helped Fireboy sweep the floor at The Headies 2021. All thanks to his mad work ethic. Well, that work ethic is making the guy gear for his third studio album. That’s three straight years with albums for the boy. Only Olamide has ever done that.
There’s no doubt that the boy will drop a solid one this time. He’s actually taking more time than he took to make “Apollo,” and there’s just a glimpse of hope in that.
When he drops the album (later this year hopefully) though, does that mean Fireboy has now transcended and left his peers like Rema and Joeboy behind? Does this mean he’s now joined the league of top dawgs like Kizz Daniel and Adekunle Gold who came almost five years before him?
Three albums is a lot, to be honest. Davido only has three, Mayorkun has only one, up until last year, Wizkid had only three too. That’s to tell you that an album is not an easy task at all.
If an artist (Fireboy, in this instance) is able to pull off three solid albums, timeframe notwithstanding, I think it’s safe to say that such artist is a de facto A-lister. What I’m saying is a third album will place Fireboy in conversations with anybody, even Davido or Wizkid.
